| The snow fell, the schools
closed, and Dr. Seuss’ birthday
came and went on March 2.
However the Grade 5 students at
the Hanover Middle School did
not fail to celebrate Read
Across America Day. On Monday,
March 9, one week late, the
Grade 5 students and their
teachers hosted guest readers
from the school system and the
community who read aloud a
variety of heartwarming,
enlightening, hilarious, and
inspirational selections.
Read Across America is a
program sponsored by the
National Education Association
(NEA) and Dr. Seuss Enterprises
along with 45 national partner
organizations. The program
encourages young and old
Americans to open a book and
celebrate reading. Its official
day of celebration is March 2,
Dr. Suess’ birthday.
This year’s celebrity readers
at the Hanover Middle School
included Capt. Jim Gallagher
from the Hanover Fire Dept.,
DARE Officer Mike McKeever from
the Hanover Police Dept.,
Hanover Town Clerk Bob Shea,
Hanover Selectman Dan Pallotta,
Sgt. John Brooks of the
Massachusetts State Police, and
Brian Voelkel, General Manager
of the Brockton Rox..
The Hanover Public School
System was represented by
readers Dr. Kristine Nash,
Superintendent of Schools; Alice
Downs, HMS School Nurse; Debbie
Rich, HMS Secretary; and HMS
Assistant Principal Kathleen
Harris. The eager listeners in
Grade 5 and their teachers
greatly appreciated the efforts
of all the guest readers.
